Instructions for running NodeScan on Linux

If your computer does not have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed you must first download and install it. Here is one place you should be able to find it. Version 1.3.1 or later is highly recommended.

The following instructions are intended as examples only. You should substitute the correct paths and version numbers as required.BOLD instructions are the commands to type. r means press the Return or Enter key.

  • 1) Download or otherwise transfer the NodeScan applications to the computer running Linux and copy them to the directory where you would like to install them.
  • 2) Open a terminal window.
  • 3) Change your working directory to the installation directory where you copied the files in step 1.
  • For example, type: "cd /home/james/" r

  • 4) Extract (decompress) the file.
  • Type:"tar -zxvf NodeScanServer.tgz " r

You should see a list to files scroll past as they are extracted. If you get an error such as "no such file", please check that you are in the correct directory (type "dir" r and check that the applications are present).

  • 5) Type: "export PATH=/usr/local/j2sdk1.3/bin:$PATH " r
  • 6) Check that the Java path is set correctly.
  • Type: "java -version" r

It should show information regarding the installed Java version. If it does not please check that you have Java installed correctly (The path above points to the Java SDK, if you have only the runtime environment installed the path will be different).

  • 7) Change to the NodeScan Server directory.
  • For example, type: "cd NodeScanServer_1.0b17" or "cd /home/james/NodeScanServer_1.0b17" r

  • 8) Run the application.
  • Type: "java -jar NodeScanServer_1.0b17.jar" r

  • 9) Repeat steps 3-8 for the NodeScan Client application.
